Colon cleansing herbs serve a variety of functions related to cleaning out the digestive system. Some of them are meant for helping you break down unwanted toxins and wastes while others are meant to help restore health.

Psyllium husk-This is an ingredient which helps strengthen the inner walls of the intestine. It also serves as a form of fiber so you become more regular.

Licorice root-You can use this herb to detoxify your liver. It also helps get rid of harmful pollutants and other substances that may be present in your blood.

Aloe Vera-This very powerful plant source helps restore the intestinal lining. It also soothes your digestive tract. It is not recommended for people who are pregnant or who have kidney disease.

Papaya-Dissolving fecal matter and other dried waste is made easier with consumption of this common food source. It contains a source of digestive enzymes that are useful for this purpose.

Rhubarb (root)-You can use this as a form of laxative, and is often a part of laxative recipes. It helps correct liver, kidney, and large intestine problems. Do not use this if you are pregnant or currently suffer gout. It safe in small doses, but do NOT use it in large doses.

Alfalfa-You can use this substance to nourish the blood. It is best used in the leaf form because supposedly it causes lupus in primates. Be careful, and only use it in the leaf form.

Guar gum-This is a bulking substance that acts like fiber which helps speed up the removal of wastes and toxins from your body. However, it can reduce the ability of the body to process healthy nutrients. Just be careful and use products with this ingredient in it somewhat sparingly.

Fennel seed-You probably have used this in your Italian cooking. It serves a variety of purposes when used in moderation. It freshens the breath, reduces bloating and gas, and relieves abdominal pain. It also helps strengthen the digestive system.

Fenugreek seed powder-This herb helps regulate your digestive system. It also is responsible for cleaning up sinus congestion and is used to fight infection. It also helps reduce inflammation.

Pumpkin seed-You can use this substance to help get rid of intestinal parasites. It has long been a part of regular colon cleansing regimens.

Turmeric-Besides the fact that it makes chicken and other meat entrées taste good it safeguards against liver, lungs, intestines, and cancer. It is best used in lower doses, especially when using the concentrated extracts or oils. It comes in a spice (powder) form too.
